The mural was painted on panels in a disused carpet factory in Durham City centre between 1986 and 1987
Once the mural was completed it was installed on the stage at the 1987 Durham Miners' Gala as a backdrop to the speeches

The mural was installed in Durham Market Place, opposite St Nic's Church, where it remained for 14 years.
